Research program courses

Course requirements (Research Program)

Background

In parallel with research activities, students at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (BME) must take courses to fulfill program requirements. Coursework is an integral part of academic training and all courses should be taken under advisement of the student’s supervisory committee. Newly admitted students should consult their primary research supervisor for course selection. Students are required to report on the progress made in courses and learning outcomes to the supervisory committee at every committee meeting. BME courses align to the three research themes (i.e., Molecular Engineering, Cell & Tissue Engineering, and Clinical Engineering) and subject specializations of the institute.

General guideline
Whereas compulsory courses must be taken to maintain registration and fulfill program requirements, students should select at least two of three foundation courses and one APS-coded course. If applicable, students should also select electives from specialization courses to gain or advance skills and abilities that complement the student’s research training program. A “General Biomedical Engineering” course list is also available for students who wish to broaden their knowledge of the field by sampling introductory-level courses to various concepts in Biomedical Engineering.

TIP: Contact the relevant course instructor(s) to learn more about course availability for the current and/or future academic sessions.

Framework

Compulsory courses: Students must take these courses to maintain registration and fulfill program requirements.

Foundation courses: Students must take at least two of three foundation courses. These courses present useful topics that cross the three research streams. Select the two courses that are most relevant to you.

Specialization courses: Students may take courses from the recommended electives list to expand subject matter expertise in a particular field of biomedical engineering. Elective recommendations may change from time to time depending on instructor availability. Students should monitor this article for updates.

APS Course: Graduate students may take one graduate-level APS course (e.g., APS1070, etc.) toward fulfillment of their course requirements. APS courses tend to teach softer skills and are less technical. Graduate-level APS course codes have four numerical digits.
