The ability to drag and drop files into a SharePoint library via the browser exists, however the experience is not standard across all browsers and applications. When dragging and dropping, ensure you see the banded "surface area" on the page before you "drop". This is usually indicated by a dotted blue border but may appear differently in different browsers. If you don't see this area, it indicates the functionality is not available.
Dragging and Dropping Emails
Emails can only be dragged from Outlook Desktop (not Outlook Online).
- Have your SharePoint destination open in the browser. You will either need to work in 2 monitors or have your screen split with SharePoint and Outlook side by side
- In Outlook, select the email(s) and drag and drop into the browser. Attachments are saved with the .msg file but will not appear if viewing the .msg file in the browser. In order to view the message and attachments, you need to download the .msg file. You may want to save attachments separately (you can also drag and drop), however you will lose the connection to the message.
Known Issues
- You can only drag and drop in Edge and Chrome. Drag and drop will not work in Firefox.
- Intermittent issues have been reported by some users. Periodically users may loose the ability to drag and drop where they were previously able to before.
- Attachments in emails will not be visible if viewing the .msg file in the browser. In order to see the attachments, the file must be downloaded and opened in Outlook.
- When .msg files are saved to SharePoint, the timestamp is different when viewed in the web previewer vs. when the .msg file is downloaded and viewed in Outlook. No fix yet. This is a display issue only. The original timestamp is preserved on the email.
Troubleshooting
- Verify you are using a compatible browser and a current version
- Verify user has correct permissions. You must have contribute or higher in order to drag and drop
- Does the user see the banded "surface area" that indicates they can drop files? If no,
- Refresh the page in your browser
- Sign out of Office 365, clear the browser cache and restart the browser.
