If your work computer is managed by Intune, you will be locked out of your device to protect your privacy if the incorrect sign-in information has been entered into your computer login page too many times. If this is the case, you will receive the following message: “The wrong sign-in info has been entered too many times, so your PC was locked to protect your privacy. See where you can find your recovery password based on the following information.” This message will be followed by a recovery key ID that is specific to your device.
To find your recovery password, please follow these instructions:*
- Make a note of the recovery key ID that is displayed on the log in screen of the device that you are locked out of.
- Go to another device such as a mobile phone or a different computer.
- From the new device, go to mail.utoronto.ca. Log in with your UTORid and password if prompted.
- Once you have logged in, go to myaccount.microsoft.com.
- Select Devices from the page menu.
- From the devices page, select the device for which you need your recovery key.
- Click View BitLocker keys and then select the Show recovery key button. If multiple recovery keys are presented, select the one that has the same recovery key ID as the one displayed on your log in screen.
- Make note of the recovery key. Enter the recovery key into the prompt on your locked device and press Enter on your keyboard.
- You should now have access to your device.
- Please ensure that you do NOT keep a copy of your recovery key with your device as this would compromise the security of your computer if it is lost or stolen. If you need to access your recovery key again, please follow the steps outlined in this article.
*Note: If you were locked out of your device because you forgot your UTORid password, please follow these instructions to reset your password before you proceed with these steps.
