Rename items in a SharePoint site

If you need to change an item's name in SharePoint, follow the steps below. If you can't rename items, it may be due to permissions. Contact the site owner/admin or EASI SharePoint Support for assistance.

Files/folders/site pages

  1. Go into the library where the file/folder/site page is.
  2. Hover over the item and right-click it. Select Rename.
  3. Enter the new name in the field. To save, select Rename.

To rename multiple files/folders in one view in a library, select Edit in grid view, double-click into the cells to enter new names, and select Exit grid view to save.

Apps

This includes libraries, lists, calendars, etc.

  1. In your site, select the gear icon (top right corner) > Site contents.
  2. Hover over the app and select the ellipses (...) > Settings.
  3. Select List name, description and navigation.
  4. Enter a new title in the Name field. Select Save.

Note: the app's URL can't be altered and will retain the app's previous title.

Site names

This updates the header, which is the largest text on the left side of the site.

  1. In your site, select the gear icon (top right corner) > Site information.
  2. Enter a new name in the Site name field. Select Save.

Note: to change the site's URL, contact EASI SharePoint Support. Time must be scheduled and site visitors notified, as the update may result in up to fifteen minutes of downtime as the switch is happening.
