Requesting a Stream Classic video migration

Introduction

This knowledge article provides an overview of the process to request a migration of Stream Classic videos to Stream on SharePoint. Before reading this knowledge article, please ensure you have read the U of T Stream Classic Retirement webpage for an overview, key dates and answers to frequently asked questions.

If you have more than 30 videos, you are eligible to request a bulk migration service where a member of the Stream support team will move all of your videos to a Microsoft 365 destination of your choice. In most cases, this will be a folder in your OneDrive. Alternatively, you can request that we move your videos to an existing SharePoint site.

If you have fewer than 30 videos, please visit the U of T Stream Classic Retirement webpage for an overview of your options.

Please read this article very carefully before requesting a migration. You will find the request form at the end of the article.

Before you request a video migration

Prepare your videos for migration

Before you request a migration, you should review your video library in Stream Classic. Please sign in with your credentials to the Stream Classic portal: web.microsoftstream.com. Go to My content in the main menu and select Videos. This will display a list of your videos in Stream Classic. You will see videos you've uploaded as well as Teams meeting recordings from before 2020. You can also access your video library directly using this link: https://web.microsoftstream.com/studio/videos.

Review the following:

  1. Unpublished videos: Videos in draft state cannot be migrated unless you publish them. Click the Publish button to the right of any draft videos you wish to migrate.
  2. Old videos and recordings: You likely have many videos that are no longer needed. This could include items such as old Teams meeting recordings. Any items you migrate to OneDrive or SharePoint will take up storage space. We recommend that you delete any videos that you do not wish to keep to free up some space.

Choose a destination for your videos

The migration tool we use for moving your videos was created by Microsoft. It lets us move your videos to one of two Microsoft location types: your personal OneDrive or a SharePoint site:

  • OneDrive: Your OneDrive is your personal Microsoft 365 storage space. The videos will go to a folder in your OneDrive called Stream Migrated Videos.
  • SharePoint: If you have an existing SharePoint site, you can move your videos there. Please provide the URL of your SharePoint site along with location in your site you would like the videos to be moved to.

If you require multiple destinations for your migrated videos, please discuss this with our team.

Requesting a video migration

Once you have successfully reviewed your videos and decided on a location to send them to, you are ready to request a migration from our team. Please complete and submit this form to request a migration: Migration Request Form. Our team will get back to you as soon as possible, but we ask that you be patient due to request volume.

Frequently asked questions

➕How do I request a migration?

If you have more than 30 videos, you can request a bulk Migration by filling out the Migration Request Form.
Due to the high volume of migration requests, we appreciate your patience and understanding as we process them in the order they are received.

➕How do I figure out how many videos I have?

Unfortunately, there is no way for end users to do an automatic count of their videos. However, you can save time by filtering and verifying if you have any videos in a "draft" state.

➕Can I move my videos to more than one location?

You can request different destinations for your videos, such as another person's OneDrive (with permission) or a team SharePoint site.

Due to Migration Tool limitations, we cannot migrate videos one by one. We can only migrate in batches.

➕What happens to my videos' permissions after they are moved to the new location?

1. Migration to OneDrive

If you migrate your videos to OneDrive, the permissions that you have set for your videos in Stream Classic will be preserved in OneDrive. This means that only the people who have access to your videos in Stream Classic will be able to view them in OneDrive.

2. Migration to SharePoint

You can choose how to handle the permissions in SharePoint. You can either choose to keep the existing permissions of the files so that only the people who have access to your videos in Stream Classic will be able to view them in OneDrive or SharePoint, or you can let your video folder inherit the permissions from your SharePoint site.

➕What happens with embedded and direct links to the old Stream Classic location?

The Stream Classic service will redirect videos to their new location until Feb 15, 2025. This means that any embedded or direct links to videos that were stored in Stream Classic will no longer work after that date. To avoid this, you will need to update your links with the new location of your videos.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you move files after migration or rename the migrated videos, the redirect links will break. Microsoft is working on changing that behaviour. Additional information: What happens when link redirection support ends?

➕How can I better organize videos in Stream on SharePoint?

Microsoft is currently working on new Stream on SharePoint capabilities and video page templates. You can check our "Clean video library view" tutorial for an overview of making a visually appealing video page in SharePoint.

Microsoft is also working on a new Stream web part that will be rolled out this summer. For more information and an updated timeline, see the Stream (Classic) web part transition plan & new Stream Webpart overview from Microsoft.
