Secure Wired Network Setup for Windows 10 & 11

 

1. From the desktop screen, click on the Windows icon. In the search box, type services.msc and press Enter.

   

2. Scroll down to Wired AutoConfig from the list, then right-click on it and choose Properties.

   

3. In the "Wired AutoConfig" dialog, select Automatic for the Startup type:, then click Start, followed by Apply, and finally, OK.

   

4. Open the "Control Panel" dialog by clicking the Windows icon and searching for Control Panel.

     

 

5. Under Network and Internet, click on View network status and tasks 

 

6. Select Change adapter settings.

 

7. From the "Network Connections" dialog, select the wired network connection from the list. It is usually labeled "Ethernet" or "Local Area Connections". Then, select Properties.

   

8. Click the Authentication tab. Select Enable IEEE 802.1X authentication and use Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP) for network authentication method.

 

9. Select Fallback to unauthorized network access and click Settings.

 

10. From the "Protected EAP Properties" dialog, enable Verify the server's identity by validating the certificate and Connect to these servers. Enter radius.wireless.utoronto.ca then select AAA Certificate Services and USERTrust RSA Certification Authority under 'Trusted Root Certification Authorities'.

 

11. Click Configure and ensure that the "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password" checkbox is unchecked. Click OK and close the 'Protected EAP Properties' dialog.

     

12. Return to the "Authentication" tab, then click Additional Settings.

 

13. In the "Advanced Settings" dialog, enable Specify authentication mode and choose User authentication. Then click Save Credentials.

 

14. A login screen prompt will appear. Enter your UTORid and Password.

     

15. Click OK to close all the opened windows. Your computer should now be authenticated to the wired network
