Course requirements (Research Program)
Background
In parallel with research activities, students at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (BME) must take courses to fulfill their program requirements. Coursework is an integral part of academic training and all courses should be taken under advisement of the student’s supervisory committee. In the absence of a full committee (i.e., newly admitted students), courses should be taken in consultation with the primary research supervisor. In turn, the student is required to report on the progress made in courses and learning outcomes to the supervisory committee at every committee meeting. BME aims to expand the breadth and depth of trainee knowledge in specific engineering areas to meet growing demand for these fields in both academia and industry. Students should select courses from the recommended courses list of the desired discipline to advance their subject matter expertise.
TIP: Contact relevant course instructor(s) to learn more about course availability for the current and/or future academic sessions.
Framework
Compulsory courses: Students must take these courses to maintain registration and fulfill program requirements.
Foundation courses: Students must take two of three foundation courses, but they may choose the two most favorable courses for their training.
Specialization courses: Students may take courses from the recommended electives list to expand subject matter expertise in a particular field of biomedical engineering. Elective recommendations may change from time to time depending on instructor availability. Students should monitor this article for updates.
APS Course: Graduate students may take one graduate-level (e.g., APS1070, etc.) APS course toward fulfillment of their course requirements. Graduate-level APS course codes have four numerical digits.
