Supervisor-specific admission policy

1.0 Background

Research students are admitted to the Institute of Biomedical Engineering to study according to the conditions of their program, which include:

Except with special permission from the unit’s Director or Associate Director, Graduate Programs, admission is for a designated role with a specific faculty supervisor. Program changes are allowed in certain situations, but supervisor changes are not.

2.0 Options

Individuals experiencing program uncertainties may wish to consider the following:

2.1 Centre for Graduate Mentorship and Supervision (CGMS) consultation

In the case of interpersonal conflict, CGMS is a resource for graduate students and faculty members to support successful supervisory relationships. CGMS services include (but are not limited to) coaching, case management, mediation, etc.

2.2 Program withdrawal

Program withdrawal does not restrict future academic endeavours of the student. You can withdraw by completing a program withdrawal form (https://www.sgs.utoronto.ca/programwithdrawal/). Program withdrawal is a voluntary action; therefore, it cannot be appealed, but you may re-apply to the graduate program in the future by completing a new application. Depending upon when you withdraw, you may receive a fees rebate (learn more about fee implications by contacting the Office of Student Accounts).

From time to time, for various personal reasons, a student may choose to withdraw from the program. Often, admissions committees are understanding of compelling extenuating circumstances and would not disadvantage/disqualify the applicant from consideration. Rather, a candidate’s resilience to adversity and persistence in their pursuit of educational endeavours is often seen positively, regardless of the branching paths that led them there. Moreover, you may be able to transfer credits earned from BME courses to a subsequent program (subject to the internal policies of the department/institution to which you apply).
