How to manage Deadlines in the Course Information System
This page applies to Department Administrators and Registrar's Offices only.
Introduction
The Deadlines setting allows Department Administrators and Registrar's Offices to set when instructor submissions are due for each Module. Deadlines are informational and do not restrict instructors from submitting data past the deadline date. Instructors will be able to view their submission deadlines within CIS as well as in automated email reminders.
Deadline Types
There are different types of deadlines that can be configured, depending on your role in CIS. All deadlines have the following in common:
- All deadlines are set per session and per module.
- All deadlines are informational and do not restrict instructors from submitting data.
- The Module Dates must be defined by the Registrar's Office in order to set a deadline for a given session and module.
Divisional Deadlines
The Divisional Deadline defines the date for when submissions are due for all courses in a division.
- Divisional Deadlines are set by Registrar's Offices and apply to all courses within a division.
- The Divisional Deadline for a given module must be within the corresponding Module Dates.
- The following applies to all divisions except for the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design:
- The Divisional Deadline for the Final Exam module is specified as the number of business days prior to the exam date, instead of a specific date.
Note: The exact deadline date for the Final Exam module may not be displayed to instructors until exam dates are available in CIS.

Departmental Deadlines
The Departmental Deadline defines the date for when submissions are due for all courses in a department.
- Departmental Deadlines are set by Department Administrators and apply to all courses within a department.
- The Departmental Deadline for a given module must be within the corresponding Divisional Deadline, if available, or Module Dates otherwise.
- The following applies to all divisions except for the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design:
- The Departmental Deadline for the Final Exam module is specified as the number of business days prior to the exam date, instead of a specific date.

Deadline Overrides
The Deadline Override defines the date for when a submission is due for a single course or Course Group.
- Deadline Overrides are set by Department Administrators or Registrar's Offices and apply to a single course or Course Group.
- Deadline Overrides set by Registrar's Offices must be within the corresponding Module Dates.
- Deadline Overrides set by Department Administrators must be within the corresponding Divisional Deadline, if available, or Module Dates otherwise.
Instructor Submission Deadlines
Instructors will see their submission deadlines on their home page as well as on each course's submission form. The deadline that applies to instructors is determined by the most specific deadline that is set, in the order listed below.
- Deadline Override
- Departmental Deadline
- Divisional Deadline
Instructors will receive email reminders for any unsubmitted courses with upcoming or past deadlines, based on the division the course is associated with.
- Faculty of Arts and Science
- 4 days before, on the day of, and 3 days after the submission deadline.
- Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering
- 7 days before, 1 day before, on the day of, 1 day after, and 3 days after the submission deadline
- University of Toronto Scarborough
- 5 days before, 1 day before, on the day of, 1 day after, and 3 days after the submission deadline
- Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design
- 7 days before, 1 day before, on the day of, and 3 days after the submission deadline
- Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education
- 7 days before, on the day of, and 3 days after the submission deadline
- Faculty of Music
- 7 days before, 3 days before, on the day of, and 3 days after the submission deadline
Access Deadlines
- On your Home Page, click the Settings tab at the top.
- Click the Manage button to the right of Deadlines.
Edit Divisional Deadlines
This feature is available to Registrar's Offices only.
The Deadlines Overview section displays your Divisional Deadline for each module.
- Click the desired session from the tabs at the top.
- Under the Deadlines Overview section, click the Edit button to the right of the desired module.
- Click the calendar icon to open the date picker and select the desired date.
Note: The Deadline for the Final Exam module may be the number days prior to the exam date, instead of a specific date. - Click the Save button at the bottom to save your changes.
Edit Departmental Deadlines
This feature is available to Department Administrators only.
The Deadlines Overview section displays your Divisional Deadline and Departmental Deadline for each module.
- Click the desired session from the tabs at the top.
- Under the Deadlines Overview section, click the Edit Departmental Deadline button to the right of the desired module.
- Click the calendar icon to open the date picker and select the desired date.
Note: The Deadline for the Final Exam module may be the number days prior to the exam date, instead of a specific date. - Click the Save button at the bottom to save your changes.
Create Deadline Overrides
This feature is available to Department Administrators and Registrar's Offices only.
The Deadline Overrides section displays all courses and Course Groups in your division or department(s) that have a Deadline Override. You can search and filter for any course using the fields provided.
- Click the desired session from the tabs at the top.
- Under the Deadline Overrides section, click the Create Deadline Override button.
- Select the desired module you want to create a Deadline Override for.
- Enter the desired course code in the text box and select the matching result from the list.
- If the selected course or Course Group should have a Deadline, select Set a Specific Date.
- If the selected course or Course Group should not have a Deadline, select No Deadline.
- If needed, click the calendar icon to open the date picker and select the desired date.
- Click the Save button at the bottom to save your changes.
