Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for the Course Information System

General

What is the Course Information System?

The Course Information System (CIS) is the University’s institutional course information system. It provides convenient, online services to support the administration of courses for instructors, departments, and faculty offices, as well as pedagogical tools for instructors to set up their courses. Find out more about CIS here.

How do I access CIS?

Using a supported web browser, go to https://cis.utoronto.ca. Find out more here.

Clicking the View button in the Syllabi module does not do anything.

If you are using Internet Explorer, you will need to use Chrome, Firefox, or Edge instead. Find out more about the supported browsers here.

For Instructors

I'm teaching multiple courses and sections that have the same content. How do I make a single submission for them all at once?

This can be done by using Course Groups. Contact your Department Administrator or Registrar's Office to have them group your courses together, before you start working on your submission.

How do I make a change after I have submitted my data?

Once you have submitted information to your department, you must contact your Department Administrator or Registrar's Office to have them reset your submission.

Why can't I view my final exam once I've uploaded it to CIS?

For security, exam files cannot be downloaded from CIS except by authorized administrative staff. A future enhancement will allow instructors to preview their exam files prior to submission.

I am having trouble uploading files to CIS.

There may be a few reasons for this:

  • Ensure that you are using one of the supported browsers.
  • Ensure that your file is saved as a PDF, less than 75MB in size.
  • If you have been inactive for more than 20 minutes, close your browser and sign into CIS again.

How do I convert my Word (.doc, .docx) file to a PDF?

  1. Open your file in Microsoft Word.
  2. Click File in the top-left and then click Save As.
  3. Select a location for where you want to save your file.
  4. Click the Save as type dropdown and select PDF (*.pdf) from the list.

For Administrative Staff
